Global Genesis Group is shopping the film, which also features Sean Young, in Cannes.
Skeet Ulrich (Scream) is returning to the horror genre in Escape Room, which was directed by Peter Dukes and recently wrapped production.
Escape rooms are adventure games that have been a phenomenon in Europe and Asia in recent years and have started becoming popular with teens and young adults in the U.S. Players are locked inside and must use elements of the room to solve a series of puzzles and escape within a set time limit.
The film focuses on four friends who partake in a popular Los Angeles escape room, owned by Brice (Ulrich), and find themselves stuck with a demonically possessed killer. Sean Young plays the keeper of a box containing an evil demon. The friends have less than an hour to solve the puzzles needed to escape the room alive.
Escape Room is scheduled for delivery at the end of August with tentative release plans for December. While no deal has been inked, Global Genesis Group has entered negotiations in Cannes for a theatrical release in the U.S.
"It is the popularity of escape rooms across America that piqued our interest initially," said Rick Romano, president of Global Genesis Group. "Once our marketing team saw the enormous popularity of the game around the world and the potential with the horror genre demographic, we gave it the green light."
He also said that in three months, an Escape Room mobile game would launch for Android and iOS devices, which will be a big part of the marketing and social media campaigns to promote the theatrical release of the film.
Global Genesis Group financed and produced the pic and is the worldwide sales agent on the project.
